INSPIRATION: Photography
The inspiration for last week’s project started out with a general principal and then moved towards the more specific.
Photography is all about seeing and perception through a lens. It is about composition, characteristics and emotion. It is about framing the every day world in such a way to create an image that captures something special.
That’s where the general inspiration for last week’s project came from, photography and what it has done to the way in which I look at the world.
Prior to getting into photography I looked at the world around me in a very different way. Yes I paid attention to my surroundings, however, I did not take the time needed to explore all aspects of a given scene and typically only looked at the obvious.
Photography has forced me to look at the world for different purposes, for different things and I guess that is why I wanted to complete this project, to gain a better perspective on the often over looked elements of the world.
More specifically though, the inspiration for this project came from having purchased a used flash and umbrella kit to play around with creative lighting.
After purchasing these things and reading some things from speedliting.com I realized that the key to great photography was not simply about creating amazing light but was about creating great shadows and how the two work together.
This is why I wanted to focus on shadows for a week, to see what relationship they have with light and the spectacular things that the two can create when combined together.

This is what I fully believe in with my photography. It’s about showing off the world in a positive way, a different perspective and the possibility to turn something into beauty. I think of someone hating their life, their day, their job, and seeing everything as mundane and ugly. I see them only seeing the negative aspects in the world. I want them to see my photography and be inspired. Inspired to remember their surroundings are beautiful and interesting and worthy of life.
Even more interesting is the act of taking the photographs. The people that walk around you and walk by become very interested in what you could be taking a photograph of. They think this area is boring, what would anyone be doing taking pictures of something here? It gets them to look and try and see what the photographer sees. I hope just one of them happens to see what I do. If not, atleast they had a thought in their mind of the possibility that something is actually interesting here.
cool study! I saw some of the photographs up on flickr too.
