WEEK 21: Reflection
Last week’s project is one that I very much enjoyed and got out of it far more than I put into it and far more than I had expected to.
Although some people may have found it simplistic, perhaps childish, I found the project to be so much more and realized the implications of the project as a whole.
Looking for the interesting and beauty in shadows required me to look beyond the obvious, past typical focal points and out of the box in order to see the shapes, patterns and possibilities that shadows possess.
Understanding how positive and negative spaces work together in harmony is the first thing I came to understand when completing this project, that when something is taken away something else is created. This has far greater implications than just shadows.
In addition, this project helped me to start to see the beauty in the ordinary, to notice things that I may have looked beyond or taken for granted, but now have started to pay more attention to.
But the bigger picture here is that this project has forced me to slow down, taking time to observe, explore and take in my surrounding more than I have in the past. By looking at shadows I’ve learned to appreciate some things that I may not have in the past. Hopefully this perspective can transfer to the other facets of my life to help with how I view and therefore interact with the world around me.
One last thing that I took away from this project was that of photography itself. Knowing that the images that might mean the most or that might have the greatest impact can be the simplest of things and knowing that beauty can be found almost anywhere, you just need to know where to look.
