WEEK 04: Skyline, A Painting
The project for Week 04 tackled a new medium (for 52 Weeks): paint.
I chose to do a painting (or series of) as I wanted to rotate mediums/projects types for the first few weeks of the year to get my “feet wet” in a little bit of everything.
Although the subject of this past week’s project might not have been original (are any subjects now-a-days?) I have wanted to paint a skyline for sometime. There is something about a skyline that is so defining yet vague and empty at the same time that I find very interesting and really enjoy.
Starting this project I really wanted to make the skyline representative of London’s skyline, however empty and un-defining some people may say it is, although in reality if the painting ended up being something entirely different I would not be surprised or angry.
This was the first project of the year for which I had to pay money for supplies. I bought some canvasses and paint from the dollar store to complement what supplies I already had at home. I spent $20.
I’ve done some painting in the past with basic supplies, so this time I was looking to go beyond the results of the last time I painted.
In a way to help the images come alive I was hoping to complement the paint component by adding cardboard cutouts to represent the buildings and to add some dept to the paintings. I really enjoy acrylic paintings that have a textured 3D component to them, and although I am not really sure how to do this with paint (nor do I think this is the right time to experiment with it), I was hoping that my vision for the cardboard addition will turn out.
Below are the results of last week’s project. Stay tuned later in the week for my reflection on this project.

This is really great stuff. The cardboard cutouts really add depth to it. I’m trying to figure out where in London those twin buildings are (Colborne & York?
The pink ones are suppose to be on Fullarton between Richmond and Talbot, but looking back on it they should have been more of a blue.
The two white ones are on Dundas between Wellington and Waterloo.
